Two Days in Edappally: A Practical Base for a Kochi Trip
Edappally works as a calm, well-connected base between the airport and the backwaters, and two days is enough to see its own highlights and reach Fort Kochi without rushing.

Why Edappally Makes Sense as a Base
Edappally sits at the junction of NH 66 and the Seaport-Airport Road, roughly 22 km and 45 to 60 minutes from Cochin International Airport depending on traffic, and about 10 km from Ernakulam Junction and Ernakulam Town stations. The Kochi Metro runs through it with Edappally and Changampuzha Park stations, which puts Marine Drive and MG Road within a 20 to 30 minute ride. Mid-range rooms in the area generally fall in the ₹2,500 to ₹5,500 band, with the larger banquet hotels charging more on weekends when wedding parties fill the halls.
The main draw is the Lulu International Shopping Mall on NH 66, one of the largest in India, with its own metro stop and a food court that stays busy until closing. Around it are smaller hotels, family restaurants and the Changampuzha Park area, which is quieter in the evenings. If your flight lands late or leaves early, staying here saves an hour of cross-city driving each way. For a two-day trip built around the airport and a bit of shopping, I would book here rather than in Fort Kochi.
Day One: Mall, Park and a Slow Evening
Start the morning at Changampuzha Park, named after the Malayalam poet, where locals walk before the heat builds. From there it is a short auto ride to the Lulu mall; arrive near opening around 10 am to park and shop before the weekend crowds. Budget two to three hours. The hypermarket is useful for snacks and SIM cards, and the cinema is a reasonable way to spend a hot afternoon. Skip the multiplex if you are here over a weekend, when queues stretch and seats sell out early.
In the evening, head to Marine Drive in Ernakulam, about 20 to 30 minutes by metro and auto, for the walkway and the boat jetty. The sunset ferry to Fort Kochi takes roughly 15 minutes and costs very little; check the last return timing before you go, as services thin out after dark. Dinner back in Edappally is easy, with biryani and seafood places along the main road. Book a hotel within walking distance of the metro rather than on the highway itself, where traffic noise carries late.
Day Two: Fort Kochi and Mattancherry
Use day two for the historic quarter. From Edappally, the metro to Ernakulam Junction and a short auto to the jetty takes about 40 minutes in total; the ferry across to Fort Kochi is quicker and more pleasant than driving around the backwaters. In Fort Kochi, the Chinese fishing nets, St Francis Church and the Dutch Cemetery sit within a 15 minute walk of each other. Allow three to four hours, more if you stop for coffee on Princess Street. The best months are November to February, when humidity drops and walking is comfortable.
Cross to Mattancherry for the Paradesi Synagogue and Jew Town, about 20 minutes on foot from the nets. The synagogue closes on Fridays and Saturdays and shuts in the early afternoon on other days, so plan it before lunch. Skip the touts offering cheap tours at the ferry landing; the area is easy to walk alone. Return to Edappally by evening, allowing 45 to 60 minutes with traffic. If you would rather not move hotels, this works well; if you want sunrise photographs of the nets, one night in Fort Kochi is worth adding.
Getting Around and What to Book
Autos and cabs are plentiful along NH 66, and the metro is the most predictable way to reach central Ernakulam. Fares are metered or agreed before you ride; use ride-hailing apps where you can. The airport road is fast outside peak hours, but the stretch near Palarivattom and Vyttila can slow to a crawl between 5 and 8 pm. Keep a buffer of at least an hour before a flight, and more during monsoon, when June to August rain causes flooding on low-lying roads.
For two days, I would book a mid-range hotel within 500 metres of Edappally metro station, with breakfast included and a cancellation window. That gives you the mall, the park and the city on foot and by metro, and keeps airport transfers short. Reserve Fort Kochi for a half-day rather than a full day if you are short on time, and keep the evening free for Marine Drive. Check the current room rates and availability for your dates before you commit.
Good to know
Questions, answered
How far is Edappally from Cochin International Airport?
About 22 km, or 45 to 60 minutes by road depending on traffic. Allow extra time between 5 and 8 pm and during the June to August monsoon, when surface flooding can slow the airport road.
Can I reach Fort Kochi from Edappally without a car?
Yes. Take the metro to Ernakulam, then a short auto to the jetty, and cross by ferry to Fort Kochi in roughly 15 minutes. The whole journey takes about 40 minutes outside peak hours.
When is the best time to visit Kochi?
November to February brings lower humidity and comfortable walking weather for Fort Kochi and Mattancherry. June to August is monsoon season, with heavy rain and occasional road flooding, so plan indoor activities and longer transfer times.
